Why Choose Hand-Dipped Beeswax Candles?
Pure beeswax burns cleanly with minimal smoke, while the natural honey fragrance and golden hue create a calming, cosy atmosphere in any home.
Hand-Dipped Beeswax Candles from Cumbria, UK
At Weald Store, we work closely with a small, skilled team in Cumbria to produce our carefully crafted collection of pure beeswax candles. For over 40 years, this dedicated workshop has been making beeswax candles in the UK, preserving traditional hand-dipping techniques.
Situated in the heart of the Pennines — an area renowned for its outstanding natural beauty — our expert candle-makers hand-dip each candle from start to finish. This slow, hands-on process ensures every candle is of the highest quality, with a smooth finish and a clean, long-lasting burn.
By supporting this small British workshop, we help keep alive a beautiful tradition of artisanal candle-making rooted in the UK’s heritage and landscape.
Hand-Dipped Beeswax Candles: A Traditional Craft
The time-honoured technique of candle dipping is a slow and gradual process. The wicks are hung from a metal frame which is dipped at intervals into the molten wax.
Each layer is cooled before they are dipped again, with this process repeated until the desired shape is reached. Though time-consuming and labour-intensive - some candles require more than 20 dips into the wax - the result is a beautifully handcrafted candle.
Dipping with beeswax can be traced back to the middle ages, when it was considered noble and reserved solely for the church and the wealthy.
Benefits of Beeswax Candles
Pure beeswax is renowned for it's golden hue. In fact, beeswax candles emits a bright, clear light similar to sunlight; bringing a gentle warmth to your space, while the natural honey scent creates a calming, cosy atmosphere.
Beeswax burns cleanly - unlike paraffin wax - with barely any smoke or drips. Known for their air-purifying properties, beeswax candles are perfect for people with allergies or asthma.
Beeswax is a renewable resource, meaning beeswax candles offer an eco-friendly alternative to man-made candles.
How to Care for Beeswax Candles
Our beeswax candles will arrive as a pair joined at the wick and wrapped in tissue paper. To use for the first time, trim the wick to around 10mm and then place on a small plate, or in a candlestick.
Trim the wick every time you light your candle. A longer wick will result in a larger flame, which will burn through the wax too quickly. Keep away from draughts to ensure an even burn.
Never leave a burning candle unattended. Keep out of the reach of children and pets. Leave at least 10cm between candles and do not burn on or near anything that can catch fire.
Store candles in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight to maintain their quality and colour. When not in use, cover candles with a lid or store them in a container to protect them from dust and debris.
Sometimes, candles that have been in store will develop a powdery coat, called 'bloom'. This is simply a result of the natural oils rising to the surface and is a marker of a pure beeswax candle. This can be wiped off with a soft, dry cloth, if wished.
Beeswax Candle Sizes & Burn Times
Our hand-dipped beeswax candles come in various sizes. The burn time quoted is per candle, so double it for the pair.
Dinner Candles: burn time of 8 hours per candle / 230mm x 22mm (9" x 7/8").
Taper Candles: burn time of 3.5 hours per candle / 120mm x 22mm (4.5" x 7/8").
Stubby Candles: burn time of 12 hours per candle / 100mm x 45mm (4" x 1 3/4").
Large Stubby Candles: burn time of 24 hours per candle / 200mm x 45mm (8" x 1 3/4").
This current batch of candles is made in Cumbria using African beeswax.
