Orange Blossom Soy Wax Scented Candle - bright and uplifting, perfect for living areas or bathrooms
Scented candles are one of my favourite ways to make a home feel instantly cosy. I love how they fill a room with gentle fragrance and set the mood for relaxation or gatherings with loved ones.
But before you strike that match and light your favourite candle, a little bit of care can make all the difference. With a few simple steps, you can help your candles burn longer, maintain their fragrance, and enjoy a clean, even flame every time.
So, whether you’re curling up with a good book or hosting friends, here are 5 tips to help keep your candles smelling wonderful, lasting longer, and in great condition.
1. How to Trim Your Candle Wick for a Cleaner, Longer Burn

A wick that’s too long creates a larger, stronger flame that burns through your wax much faster than it should. Not only does this shorten the life of your candle, but it can also cause uneven burning, black soot on the glass, and even smoke that affects the fragrance.
I always trim my wicks to about 5mm before lighting. It keeps the flame steady and controlled, helping the wax melt evenly across the surface. This simple step not only makes your candle last longer but also ensures a clean burn and a more consistent scent release. For jar candles, a small pair of scissors or a wick trimmer works perfectly.
2. How Long Should You Burn a Candle? Avoiding Tunnelling and Uneven Wax

For the first burn, let your candle burn for 2–4 hours, or until the entire surface of the wax has melted. This establishes a full wax pool and helps prevent “tunnelling,” which happens when the wax burns only around the wick, leaving the edges untouched.
Tunnelling wastes wax and can make the candle difficult to relight. If you notice it happening, you can carefully press the edges of the softened wax toward the wick to even it out. After the first burn, try to let your candle burn long enough each time to create a full wax pool, but never leave it unattended.
3. Keep Your Candle Away from Draughts for an Even Burn

Even the gentlest breeze can make a flame flicker, causing uneven wax melting and affecting fragrance release. For the best results, I place my candles in a sheltered spot. A cosy reading nook, mantle, or table away from open windows is ideal.
This not only keeps the wax level even but also prevents the flame from flickering excessively, which can lead to soot on the glass or rapid burning. Small adjustments in placement can make a big difference to how long your candle lasts and how cleanly it burns.
4. Storing Your Candles to Preserve Fragrance and Quality

Proper storage is key to keeping your candles looking and smelling their best. Always replace the lid when the candle isn’t in use to prevent dust and debris from settling on the wax. Dust can affect the appearance and even how the candle burns.
I like to store candles in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight and heat. This preserves the scent, prevents the wax from softening or discolouring, and ensures that your next burn is as even and enjoyable as the first. For seasonal rotation, I keep the rest of my candles in a cupboard or drawer where they’re protected from temperature fluctuations.
5. When to Stop Burning Your Candle for Safety and Longevity

Never burn a candle when the wax level is less than 10mm. At this point, the wick struggles to maintain a steady flame, and there’s a higher risk of the glass overheating or cracking. Once that level is reached, I extinguish the candle and allow it to cool.
